YAMAFRIK-FASHION

PROBLEM statement :

The illiteracy rate in Guinea is very high, with women being disproportionately affected due to entrenched traditional hierarchies and patriarchal norms within the community. Cultural expectations often confine women to domestic roles, reinforcing the belief that they should primarily function as housewives. From an early age, girls are socialized into these roles by assisting their mothers with household chores, with limited access to formal education or professional development.

As a result, many women later find themselves widowed or divorced, often with children, and without vocational skills or professional qualifications. Fieldwork has highlighted that this situation significantly contributes to the vulnerability of women within the community.

In response to this challenge, we created Yamafrik, a fashion-based project designed to provide girls and women with employment opportunities that can improve their living conditions and prospects for the future.

SOLUTION

YAMAFRIK is a fashion initiative dedicated to transforming locally sourced fabrics into a range of high-quality African-inspired products, including shoes, jewelry, clothing, belts, hats, and other accessories. The project aims to meaningfully engage disadvantaged young women, persons with disabilities, and marginalized groups—particularly widows with dependent children and limited professional opportunities—primarily from rural communities.

Through structured training and skills development, YAMAFRIK seeks to support participants in transitioning from rural and economically disadvantaged backgrounds to urban-centered professional environments, thereby fostering economic independence and improved quality of life. The initiative will operate as a small-scale production unit complemented by a training workshop designed to equip beneficiaries with practical skills for employment within the industry or for launching their own entrepreneurial ventures.

OPPORTUNITY OFFER

YAMAFRIK is a revenue-generating project launched by the NGO United Actions for Community Development, aligned with its broader mission of promoting women’s empowerment and equal opportunity. Currently at the seed stage, the project is actively seeking funding and sponsorship for implementation in Conakry, Guinea.

YAMAFRIK will provide free vocational training courses to young girls in vulnerable situations, marginalized individuals, and persons with disabilities within the community. These programs will include apprenticeships in information and communication technology (ICT), tailoring, fashion design, and other fashion-related training courses.

PRODUCTS AND SERVICES :

Yamafrik will offer a diverse range of products, including shoes, clothing, bags, belts, jewelry, and other fashion accessories designed to meet the needs of customers of all ages and backgrounds. The company will provide training and capacity-building opportunities for women, equipping them with the skills, professionalism, and industry knowledge necessary for sustainable careers in the fashion sector.

The initiative will focus on transforming locally sourced fabrics into a wide variety of fashion products tailored to customer preferences and contemporary styles. By producing high-quality and culturally inspired designs, Yamafrik aims to attract both domestic and international customers.

Through product design, manufacturing, and marketing activities, the company will create employment opportunities for young women, particularly those from economically disadvantaged rural and urban communities. This approach will contribute to social transformation, women's economic empowerment, and local economic development.

Women involved in the project will actively contribute to the growth of the Yamafrik brand by sharing their creativity, ideas, and designs through the company’s online platform. The customer service team will manage the uploading and presentation of products on the website, ensuring accessibility for both local and international customers.

To facilitate global market access, Yamafrik will collaborate with national and international shipping companies to distribute products worldwide. Logistics operations will include packaging, handling, and shipment coordination to ensure efficient delivery to customers across different regions. In addition, the company will partner with local retail outlets and shops to expand product visibility and sales within domestic markets.

MARKETING PLAN

The Yamafrik will market its unique products by emphasizing the transformation of locally sourced fabrics into high-quality fashion items, including shoes, belts, jewelry, hats, bags, and clothing. The brand will position itself as a socially responsible enterprise that promotes local craftsmanship, cultural heritage, and women's economic empowerment.

Marketing activities will focus on digital platforms, including a professional website, social media channels, and online marketplaces, to reach both local and international customers. Regular content showcasing product designs, production processes, and customer testimonials will strengthen brand awareness and engagement.

The Yamafrik will also participate in fashion exhibitions, trade fairs, and community events to increase visibility and attract potential buyers. Partnerships with local boutiques, retailers, and tourism outlets will expand market access. Promotional campaigns, seasonal discounts, and influencer collaborations will further enhance customer acquisition and retention.

Through these strategies, the workshop aims to build a strong brand identity, increase sales, and create sustainable employment opportunities.

MILESTONES :

The project will progress through key milestones to establish a small local fashion production enterprise. First, local fabrics and materials will be identified and sourced from community producers. Next, artisans will be trained in designing and producing value-added products such as shoes, belts, hats, jewelry, bags, and accessories. Prototype development and product testing will follow to ensure quality and market appeal. Production equipment and workspace will then be established, enabling small-scale manufacturing. Marketing, branding, and packaging systems will be developed to support sales. Finally, products will be launched into local and regional markets, with continuous monitoring, customer feedback, and business growth evaluation.
